Inclusive Housing & Accessibility Needs

Inclusive Housing

Housing Options: Understanding Your Choices

Residence Life & Student Housing is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable in their living space. We offer two optional housing approaches that allow students to choose what works best for them:

Inclusive Housing (Opt-In Option)

Inclusive Housing allows students to indicate openness to being assigned a roommate regardless of gender identity.

By opting into Inclusive Housing, you may be placed with a roommate who identifies as transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, gender fluid, or a different gender than your own.

If you choose not to opt in, you will only be assigned roommates who share your legal gender as recorded in the university system.

Important Note:
Inclusive Housing is not the same as applying for a Living Learning Community (such as a Gender-Inclusive or Allies community). This option simply helps us match you with roommates based on your comfort level.

Mixed-Gender Housing (By Request Only)

Mixed-Gender Housing is a separate, intentional living arrangement where students of different genders choose to live together.

This option requires:

  • Agreement from all members of the roommate group
  • Direct coordination with the Housing Assignments team
  • The roommate group must fill the entire unit or apartment space

Because our system assigns housing based on gender by default, Housing staff will manually adjust placements to accommodate approved mixed-gender groups.

Key Difference

  • Inclusive Housing = You are open to being assigned a roommate of any gender
  • Mixed-Gender Housing = You choose specific roommates of different genders to live with

Accessability Needs

Residence Life and Student Housing works in partnership with the UNM Accessibility Resource Center to provide accommodations to UNM self-identified students with disabilities. Students with documented disabling conditions that affect a major life activity are eligible. Students must be registered with the Accessibility Resource Center.

While special housing accommodations are available, they are limited and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Housing assignments are made based on the required recommendations from the Accessibility Resource Center.  For more information, feel free to email Customer Service Help Desk or call at 505-277-2606.
