Safety and Security
Living in the UNM Residence Halls provides many systems and staff resources to help keep you safe.
Hall Security
Each residence hall has a primary location for entry— all other doors are exit only. Your LoboCard will grant entry exclusively to your residence hall. Do not prop open perimeter doors. All guests must be UNM students, except family or friends assisting with move-in or move-out. Residents are responsible for their guests’ behavior and must escort them at all times. Prior to a visit, RLSH requires registration of all overnight guests and any guest who is not a resident of the same building as the host. Guests must follow all residence hall policies.
RA On-Duty
Within each community, there is one Resident Advisor on duty each night from 8:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. to handle emergencies in your residence hall. Their name and number are posted in the lobby or courtyard. You can also call the SRC 24-hour Desk at (505) 277-9203.
Blue Light Emergency Call Box System
There are Emergency Call Boxes located throughout campus, as well as the residence halls. Push and hold the red button and talk into the speaker. The call box system connects you directly to UNM Police Deparment dispatch and they will alert the necessary help for you.
Personal Safety
Although our campus is considered "safe," please keep in mind that it is located in a busy city. Although we provide you with a safe environment, you also must help. Lock your room doors, especially while you are asleep. Confront transients in your living area or get assistance if you are not comfortable confronting them yourself. Please inform the desk or an RA of any problems that require attention. Let’s work together to keep our environment safe.
Emergencies
The Student Residence Center (SRC) Commons Desk is open 24 hours and can be contacted any time at (505) 277-9203 in case of an emergency. When you call, please be sure to state your name, what the problem is, and where the problem is located. You can also call the RA on duty (Nightly 8pm-7am).
Medical Emergencies
If you are faced with a serious medical emergency that needs immediate attention, do not hesitate to call 911 for paramedics. After calling the paramedics, please call the hall front desk or the RA On-Duty inform them of the situation.
Fire
In case of a fire, please call an Advisor or the desk. Our staff will set off alarms and call the fire department. For your own safety, please evacuate the building immediately if the alarm sounds. All fire drills and alarm checks will be posted in advance.
Campus Police
Campus Police are available for serious security problems, theft, or other incidents that need immediate attention. They may be called at (505) 277-2241. If you do call the police, please inform the desk or the resident advisor on duty. Residence Hall Student Safety and Security Staff patrol residence halls and outside areas. The Campus Escort Service may be reached at (505) 277-2241.
Lost or Stolen Keys
Please report lost or stolen keys to your front desk immediately, so we can help ensure your safety. You'll have 72 hours to recover your key (except at the end of a term) prior to our installing a new lock. You may request an immediate lock change when you report a missing key. Your student account will be charged for the lock change and new keys.
